Printmaking

Art 241 Etching Studio I
3 credits

A beginning level course for those students with limited or no experience. It will introduce basic etching procedures and provides a solid foundation, both technical and conceptual so that personal ideas and imagery may be pursed more in depth at the upper level classes. The connection between etching and other media is also examined.

Art 341 Etching Studio II
3 credits

While continuing to master the technical process of etching, students will be encouraged to develop personal ideas and images. Demonstrations will explore further technical possibilities including multiple plate color etching and non-standard techniques. Students will produce a portfolio of editioned prints.

Art 441 Etching Studio III
3 credits

While refining the technical process of etching, concept and image will always be considered throughout the course. There will be continued demonstrations on multiple plate color etching and the use of non-standard techniques. Students are expected to work independently, define their own projects, realize goals they have established and produce a portfolio of editioned prints. The printmaking classes will hold individual and group critiques, have access to the Uffizi museums print collection and will participate in field trips.

Art 231 Lithography Studio I
3 credits

This course is an introduction to the basic processes and techniques of lithography. It will introduce ideas, materials and fundamental techniques of drawing and painting on and from lithographic stones and metal plates, primarily in black and white. Includes lectures, demonstrations, critiques, and practical experience.

Art 311 Lithography Studio II
3 credits

This Intermediate level class will have a particular emphasis on multi color printing and special processes including photo reproduction. Development of technical and conceptual skills will continue with the goal of developing an individual approach to a full integration of ideas, materials and processes. Students will produce a portfolio of editioned prints.

Art 431 Lithography Studio III
3 credits

In this advanced level course students will individually determine the subjective and visual content of their work based on sources including ideas, materials and perception.Traditional as well as cutting edge and cross-disciplinary approaches to Lithography are supported. Students will produce a professional portfolio of work.
