PHOT 248 Photography I

Introduction to viewing the world through a lens and the expressive possibilities of black and while photography. Projects and assignments will introduce students to both traditional and experimental ways of image making with an emphasis on the interdependence of form, technique, and concept. Students must provide their own camera.

PHOT 342 Introduction to Digital Photography

This class is designed to introduce the necessary skills to work with images in the digital realm. The class will explore combining images from various sources including photographs, video, drawings, or printed originals, and carefully explain and demonstrate scanning from negatives and prints. Students learn how to use digital cameras as an additional imaging resource and are introduced to imaging and page layout programs for combining images and text. Topics covered will include the fundamentals of color management, digital retouching, input and output resolution, and optimizing files for printing. Students must provide their own camera.

PHOT 343 Photography II

The focus of this intermediate-level course is on using the medium of photography in ways that promote creativity, innovation, experimentation, and continuing growth in both technical and aesthetic accomplishment. Students will be encouraged to pursue their own personal interests and directions that surface through their exploration of observing Florence thru the lens.

PHOT 348 Digital Photography II

Students will learn more advanced technical skills than those covered in beginning photo. Emphasis is placed on expanding and refining technical control and visual communication skills. Students must provide their own camera.

PHOT 377 Pinhole and Toy Cameras

The class will begin with with constructing pinhole cameras and then move onto experimenting with a variety of toy and plastic cameras. The class will create work that brings a spontaneity and unpredictability not found in todays precision made image making devices.

PHOT 378 Alternative Processes

This course explores a variety of non silver photographic printmaking and print-manipulation processes that depart from the more prevalent black-and-white, color and digital approaches.

PHOT 448 Advanced Photography

Each student has the opportunity to begin to personalize his or her work through a self-directed investigation of ideas through image making. It may be organized around a specific photographic genre or studio practice. There will be individual and group critiques in order to help students achieve clarity of expression.
