EXHIBITION 500 OGGI - Le Vite dell'Arte in Contemporanea

500 Oggi Le Vite dell’Arte in Contemporanea (22-30 October 2011) is a contemporary art project dedicated as part of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of the birth of Giorgio Vasari, focusing on the multiplicity of cultural realities typical of our times characterized by differences and contradictions.

Starting with the location of the initiative, the building that was once the residence to Giorgio Vasari in Florence, and now home to the Firenze Arti Visive School of Fine Arts, the exhibit features installations by nine national and international artists, both established and emerging included in an itinerary suggested by the location itself revealing the diversity and cultural quality of living in it. The initiative is therefore an important starting point, not only for the evocative power of the centenary but also and especially the issues related to the complexity of the language and criteria related to making art.

The exhibition was born as a necessary factor to making a change in the approach to contemporary art, together with the desire to return Florence to a new national and international centrality, not only from the historical point of view, but also, quite rightly, with contemporary art. Thus, Vasari's versatility and efficiency created a necessary parallel with the idea of innovation based on the reinterpretation of our tradition.

The title takes its cue from the unmistakeable edition of Vasari's Lives precisely to emphasize the continuous intersection of different identities, multiple and circular paths of comparison. For this special occasion, the video installation Acceptance by the American internationally renowned artist Bill Viola is present in the exhibition to complement this event.

According with the educational objective of FIRENZE ARTI VISIVE School of Fine Arts, the investment in the intellectual education of young people from all over the world, the practice of art and national and international contemporary knowledge mean that an event of this magnitude represents growth and enrichment for the students and the city of Florence, further emphasizing the indissoluble and essential union between the historical heritage of our territory and contemporary culture, further emphasized by the extraordinary opening to the public during the inauguration of the exhibition, of the Salon of Arts and Artists entirely frescoed by Vasari and considered one of the hidden treasures of Tuscan Late Mannerism.
