Ital 261 History of Italian Cinema
3 credits

This course is a historical introduction to the rich field of Italian film from the classics of neorealism to the auteurs of the 50'5, 60'5 and 70'5. We will be paying particular attention to cinema as a practice informed by political and social history, as well as questions of national identity, class and gender.

Ital 262 Contemporary Italian Cinema
3 credits

The class will give students an understanding of present-day Italian cinema. Films will be analyzed and compared, as well as recurring topics, and issues and contemporary Italian culture will be discussed. The class will take advantage screening Italian independent films that do not have an American distribution contract.
